Pagan and Wiccan Handfasting Options
You don’t have to be Pagan or Wiccan to find the beauty in the words of these Handfasting rituals. I have officiated traditional weddings that have concluded their ceremony with a nod to a Pagan Handfasting. Listed below are some examples.
How to hold your hands:
You can stand facing each other, as you have throughout the ceremony. Hold all 4 hands (left to left, right to right) it makes the symbol of eternity.
~Or~
Bride right to Grooms left, this signifies that they come together in the center and form one person. They are looking out together into the same direction, with a common objective.
~Or~
Bride and Groom left to left, ring hand to ring hand, signifies that you are bound by your vows; the left is the side your hearts are, so you are bound by the feelings in your hearts. Left to left has you facing each other signifying each will always have the other in mind, also you can each see behind the other, watching their back above your own.
Option #1 - Incorporate some ancient and pagan ceremony traditions.
This would be after your vows.
Officiant:
Today, we ask that the infinite light of the divine shine upon this union. In that spirit, I offer a blessing to this ceremony.
Blessed be this marriage with the gifts from the east -- new beginnings that come each day with the rising sun, communication of the heart, mind, body and soul.
Blessed be this marriage with the gifts of the south -- the light of the heart, the heat of passion, and the warmth of a loving home.
Blessed be this marriage with the gifts of the west -- the rushing excitement of a raging river, the soft and pure cleansing of a rainstorm, and a commitment as deep as the ocean itself.
Blessed be this marriage with the gifts of the north -- a solid foundation on which to build your lives, abundance and growth of your home, and the stability to be found by holding one another at the end of the day.
Bride and Groom these four simple blessings will help you on your journey that begins today. However, they are only tools. They are tools which you must use together to create the light, the strength, the infinite energy now and forever of a love you both so richly deserve.
Now, I bid you look into one another's eyes and hearts. I ask you now to cross your hands over each other, and take one another's hands.
Officiant wraps the cord around the bride and grooms wrists, binding them together loosely and tying a knot.
Bride and Groom this cord ribbons symbolizes so much. It is your life, your love, and the eternal connection that the two of you have found with one another. The ties of this handfasting are not formed by these ribbons, or even by the knots connecting them. They are formed instead by your vows, by your pledge, your souls, and your two hearts, now bound together as one.
As hands are still bound:
Pronouncement:
Officiant:
Inasmuch as you Groom and you Bride have thus consented in holy matrimony and have witnessed the same before God and these friends, by virtue of the authority vested in me as an Officiant and the laws of this state, I now pronounce you husband and wife. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.
You may kiss the Bride!
Officiant will remove the cord while saying:
The knots of this binding are not formed by these chords but instead by your vows. Either of you may drop the chords, for as always, you hold in your own hands the making or breaking of this union.
Officiant will prompt maid of honor to hand the bride her bouquet. Bride and groom will face their guests.
Officiant:
It is with great honor I present to you Mr. and Mrs. _____

Option 2: Strand of 4 cords,
Colors are Gold, Red, Green and Blue. With participation of either family/friends whomever you choose to be asked to come forward to wrap each cord.
Handfasting
Officiant:
Are you now ready to continue and take your vows not as two but as one
(Bride) and (Groom): We are.
Is it also your wish today that your hands be fasted in the ways of old
(Bride) and (Groom): It is.
Remember then as your hands are fasted, these are not the ties that bind...
Cords are held aloft
The role already taken by the song your hearts share shall be now be strengthened by the vows you take. All things of the material world eventually return to the Earth unlike the bond and the connection your spirits share which is destined to ascend to the heavens.
(I can do a repeat after me with the attendants if you like, or they can have their wording written on a paper to read from)
Officiant: Do you vow to keep open your hearts and minds that neither words nor the lack of them shall ever cause a silence to dwell between you that your love cannot bridge?
(Bride) and (Groom): We do.
____ comes forward, taking the Gold Cord, she lays it over the couple’s hands
____: We wish for you both a bright future, filled with joy and happiness.
_____ Steps back
Officiant: Do you vow to ever remember to take joy in life, and in each other, never forgetting it is the matters of the heart that are real?
(Bride) and (Groom): We do.
______ comes forward, taking the Red Cord, he lays it over the couple’s hands
_____ We wish for you eternal love and passion for life.
_____ Steps back
Officiant: Do you vow to share whatever burdens the mundane world may present, in that overcoming them together your spirits shall grow towards a common hope, dream and reality?
(Bride) and (Groom): We do.
____ comes forward, taking the Green Cord, she lays it over the couple’s hands
_____: We wish for you good health and abundance with prosperity, now and forever.
_____ Steps back
Officiant: Do you vow to love and cherish each other keeping sacred above all else, the place your hearts hold for one another?
(Bride) and (Groom): We do.
____ comes forward, taking the blue Cord, she lays it over the couple's hands
____: We wish for you peace and serenity.
Officiant: May you be forever as one in the passion and fire of your spirits, and the deepest love that your souls have to give, ever steadfast and unwavering, yet as full of promise and fresh as the dawn on each new horizon.
Bride and Groom’s hands are bound
You are now as your hearts have always known you to be,
Husband and Wife. You may kiss the bride!”

Option 3. (4 cords) Placed on the couple by the officiant.
Bride & Groom have chosen to express their love through very ancient traditions practiced by lovers of centuries past. Many such traditions originate out of ancient Celtic and Scandinavian cultures and were later adopted by peoples of other faiths. Handfasting is one of those.
Handfasting is literally “Tying the knot.” In this ceremony cords of four colors will be used, Yellow, Red, Blue and Green.
Yellow symbolizes friendship and communication which are crucial to any successful joining between a man and woman.
Red symbolizes the passion {Bride} and {Groom} feel for each other and warmth they will share through the future years.
Blue symbolizes fidelity, trust, compassion and the ability to adapt to the changes that will doubtless occur during their life together.
Green symbolizes the prosperity, growth and happiness we all wish for them.
Just as you often see the presence of those four colors in a rainbow joining heaven and earth so too may you see these qualities in the life of a marriage.
I ask you now join your left hands. The hands that are nearest to your hearts. The hands on which you wear your wedding rings.
The promises made today and the ties that are bound here greatly strengthen your union; they will cross the years and lives of each soul's growth.
Do you still seek to enter this ceremony?
Yes, we seek to enter.
I bid you look into each other’s eyes.
Will you communicate openly and honestly with each other?
We will.
Will you share the laughter and the tears, the pleasure and the pain, the joy and heartache that comes from married life?
We will.
(The Yellow cord is draped over the couples' hands)
And so the binding is made.
When anger and hurt occur in your marriage, will you take the passion of anger and use it to heal the hurt and temper the strength of this union ?
We will.
Will you seek to make your home a haven, to share the warmth of your hearth and your hearts with each other, family and friends?
We will.
(The Red cord is draped over the couples' hands)
And so the binding is made.
Will you honor and respect one another, and seek to never break that honor?
We will.
Will you trust in the changes that occur in your relationship and use those changes to build a stronger bond?
We will.
(The Blue cord is draped over the couples' hands)
And so the binding is made.
Will you share your dreams one with another and dream together to create new realities and hopes?
We will.
Will you build a foundation for your marriage that is grounded in love, seeing to one another’s needs and happiness and work to grow your relationship in that love for as long as you shall remain on this Earth?
We will.
(The Green cord is draped over the couples' hands)
And so the binding is made.

Bride and Groom as your hands are bound together now, so your lives and spirits are joined in a union of love and trust.
Above you are the stars and below you is the earth.
Like the earth should your love be a firm foundation from which to grow stronger through the seasons.
Like a star should your love be a constant source of light.
Like a flame should your union be warm and glowing with love in your hearts.
Like the wind may you sail through life safe and calm.
Like water should your relationship remain clean and soothing, that it may never thirst for love.
As your hands are removed a knot will be formed reminding you always of the words spoken here today. This represents the bond you have made.
(Once cords are tied together they are removed and placed on altar.)
Groom and Bride these cords symbolize so much. It is your life, your love, and the eternal connection that the two of you have found with one another. The ties of this handfasting are not formed by these cords, or even by the knot connecting them. In times past it was believed that the human soul shared characteristics with all things divine. It is this belief which assigned virtues to the cardinal directions, each direction representing a Essential Element; East for Wind, South for Fire, West for Water and North for Earth. It is in this tradition that a blessing is offered in support of this ceremony.
Divine One, I ask you to bless this couple, their love, and their marriage as long as they shall live in love together.
Bless them with communication, intellectual growth, and wisdom.
Bless them with harmony, vitality, creativity, and passion.
Bless them with friendship, intuition, caring, understanding, and love.
Bless them with tenderness, happiness, compassion, and sensuality.
May they be forever as one in the passion and fire of their union.
May it be so.
